Shell and Greenpeace settle dispute over sea protest

Shell and Greenpeace have settled a dispute regarding a sea protest. Nearly two years ago, six climate activists partially occupied a ship bound for a Shell platform in the North Sea for thirteen days.

In response, Shell filed a lawsuit against Greenpeace. To settle the case, Greenpeace will pay £300,000, approximately €363,000, to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution instead of Shell.

Additionally, Greenpeace has agreed not to protest at three of Shell’s oil and gas fields in the North Sea for the next five years, and at a fourth field for the next ten years. Shell expressed satisfaction that the dispute is resolved, emphasizing that while protest is a fundamental right, this particular action was “dangerous for the activists and crew.” Greenpeace acknowledged making concessions to avoid potentially devastating financial consequences from a threatened multi-million pound claim by Shell.
