In California, a man has died after being trapped by debris due to large waves on a beach, likely caused by “hurricane-like” winds affecting the coast, according to local authorities. Nearby, another man is missing, presumed swept out to sea by high waves; search efforts were halted due to worsening weather.
The weather service on X advises staying away from the coast. In Santa Cruz, part of a pier collapsed under pounding waves.
Two engineers and a project manager were inspecting the pier; two were rescued by firefighters, while the third secured their own safety. The pier, damaged last winter, is under restoration.
The pier’s end, including facilities like toilets and a restaurant, detached and debris washed ashore hundreds of meters away. Local firefighters state that the pier and nearby beaches are closed to the public, citing hazards from debris and drifting pier pilings.
