The seven men facing court next week for violence in Amsterdam following the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv football match will not be prosecuted for terrorism, according to Chief Public Prosecutor René de Beukelaer speaking to AT5. The Public Prosecution Service plans to demand unconditional prison sentences for the violence last month, with some defendants also facing charges of anti-Semitism.
After the match on November 7, several violent incidents occurred, including Israeli fans being chased and assaulted. While some experts and the Israeli ambassador called it “coordinated terrorism,” making such a legal case is complex, explains De Beukelaer.
The violence stemmed from anger and frustration over Gaza, not a direct intent to instill fear in a specific group. The seven suspects, aged 19 to 32, reside in various cities, with no statements on migration backgrounds due to irrelevance to the criminal proceedings.
Additional suspects are still being investigated.
