Senate Reviews Bill to Ban Designer Drugs Groups

A ban on groups of chemical substances aims to end the cat-and-mouse game between the government and producers of designer drugs. Today, the Senate is reviewing a bill that would simultaneously prohibit several “new psychoactive substances.” Currently, synthetic drugs are added individually to the Opium List, which is time-consuming.

Once a substance is banned, producers alter a molecule to create a new legal substance. An example is the drug 3-MMC, which appeared after 4-MMC was banned.

When 3-MMC was also listed, producers formulated 2-MMC. This new compound remains legal, though its effects are similar to banned counterparts.
