This morning, Russia conducted a major airstrike on Ukraine, targeting the country’s gas and energy sector, according to President Zelensky. The attack resulted in power outages in several regions, including Kharkiv, Sumy, and Zaporizhzhia, as reported by the state energy company Ukrenergo.
Zelensky stated that Ukraine intercepted thirty out of the forty missiles launched by Russia, and seventy drones were used in the assault. The Ukrainian Energy Minister urged residents to take shelter during air raids, asserting that “the enemy continues to terrorize Ukrainians.” The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the attack on the energy sector, claiming all planned targets were hit.
Yesterday, a significant Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at a chemical plant in the Russian city of Engels, over 630 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, which the military described as part of a “multi-day, comprehensive assault.” Russia regularly attacks Ukrainian power plants, leading to prolonged electricity outages. Recovery efforts are hindered by a lack of spare parts, as observed by NOS reporters last year at a damaged coal plant.
