Rotterdam residents angered by housing corporation’s plans

Residents of a housing complex in Rotterdam are upset because the housing corporation plans an extensive renovation following an explosion in several apartments. Despite promises to return, some residents doubt they can move back.

A meeting meant to address neighborhood safety revealed that the entire complex would be renovated, requiring residents to leave within twelve months. The complex is located on Allard Piersonstraat in Rotterdam-West.

An unknown man placed an explosive there on September 10, injuring two people and damaging fourteen apartments. The remaining 51 apartments will also be vacated for a much-needed renovation due to structural issues, according to Kevin van Eikeren from Woonstad.

However, some residents lack confidence in returning, citing missing detailed plans and concerns over conditions and uncertainties tied to the return guarantee. Additionally, residents feel their safety concerns were ignored before the explosion.

Woonstad, however, claims to have taken action by collaborating with the police and increasing security measures. Three suspects related to the explosion have been arrested, but the person responsible and their motive remain unclear.
