Rotterdam District Holds Vigil for Shooting Victims

In the Rotterdam district of IJsselmonde, a three-minute silence was observed last night in memory of the shooting victims from the New Year period. The idea was initiated by children and young people in the neighborhood, according to regional broadcaster Rijnmond.

Approximately fifty residents gathered to light candles. Among them was youth worker Lianne van Dis-Dikker, who expressed feeling the neighborhood’s grief and insecurity during her opening speech.

The victims, men aged 58, 63, and 81, were shot between December 21 and January 2. A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of three counts of murder or manslaughter.

A large peace dove was drawn on the Susannadijk square, where children first lit candles. Ten-year-old Jayjani said, “These lights give me hope and peace,” while her classmate Amara noted the beauty of the lights on the dove.

Van Dis-Dikker highlighted the importance of community solidarity, stating that while the events deeply affected her, it was special to witness the community coming together to make a statement of support and care. After lighting the candles, the neighborhood observed a three-minute silence.

Ayoub Bensiali, the initiator from the IJsselmonde Youth Council, remarked on the significance of the gathering, emphasizing that no one is forgotten. Young residents Marouan, Jaden, and Angelo described the period around the shootings as tense and frightening, noting the impact on their families.

When the police began searching for the suspect, everyone was on alert, communicating to stay indoors. During the tense days, several youths were stopped by police as they matched the suspect’s description, reported Rijnmond.

The young people aim not only to remember the victims but also to promote a positive atmosphere.
