Risk of Icy Roads Despite Sun Following Snow

The snow from last night and this morning has ended, with the sun now shining. However, the risk of icy roads remains, especially tonight and into tomorrow morning.

Low temperatures are expected inland, with minimums around or below freezing. Only the northwestern coastal region will stay well above freezing.

Significant showers are expected from the North Sea, with rain near the coast and (wet) snow further inland. The further southeast, the higher the chance of snow accumulation.

Evening and night conditions may lead to road slipperiness due to freezing of wet surfaces or temporary snow cover. While snow is visible, icy roads are more dangerous as they are harder to detect.

Sidewalks can also be slippery for pedestrians. Although salting is widespread, it is not universal, and heavy rain can dilute the salt, diminishing its effectiveness in preventing ice formation.

This issue was noted earlier this week in Groningen. Ice cannot be entirely prevented.

Tomorrow, temperatures will rise above freezing, showers will decrease, the sun will shine more frequently, and the risk of icy roads will diminish by day’s end.
