During a court session in Curaçao, a group of sixteen military police officers listened as three men received reduced sentences for the murder of their colleague, Toon Brood, on May 31 last year. Amon F. (20) was sentenced to 26 years, down from the 28 years requested, despite having killed before.
Aivano M. (23), who fired the fatal shots, received 18 years instead of 20. Claverzjion N. (26) was sentenced to 16 years, two years less than demanded.
Glennson Z. (27), the driver who led the group to Brood’s home, received 30 months with part of the sentence suspended, whereas five years had been requested. The court ruled Z. was involved in the robbery but not the murder.
The sentences were based on guidelines for similar cases. On the night of May 31, Brood, a lieutenant and border control team leader, encountered three intruders in his home, resulting in his death during a struggle.
His wife was threatened, and their house was ransacked. The perpetrators’ actions were deemed “ruthless” by the court.
The investigation quickly identified the culprits through CCTV footage and wiretaps, with Claverzjion N. identified via intelligence services. The murder affected Brood’s family, colleagues, and the Curaçao community.
Military police officers expressed concern over the reduced sentences, and both the prosecution and the convicted have two weeks to appeal.
