Research by the academic hospital in Maastricht reveals that over 25% of women who freeze their eggs return to use them. Among these women, an average of two embryo transfers were performed, resulting in a positive pregnancy test for nearly half, and 34.6% eventually had a baby.
On average, the eggs were stored for 3.5 years. Researcher Elena ter Welle-Butalid notes that these findings can aid women in making the challenging decision about egg freezing.
She mentions that the decision on whether 25% is significant depends on personal perspective, with women eager for children likely seeing it as a worthwhile chance. The study also highlights that only women with medical reasons, such as cancer, receive financial coverage for egg freezing, while others must bear the costs themselves, often amounting to thousands of euros.
The research tracked over 1100 women, two-thirds of whom were undergoing cancer treatment.
