Purple Friday faces challenges in Dutch schools

Secondary schools across the Netherlands are facing challenges with Purple Friday, a day focused on supporting LGBTQ+ students. Reports from NOS Stories indicate increasing opposition to the event.

Some schools are replacing it with a general “Be Yourself” day or canceling it altogether. COC Netherlands, an LGBTQ+ advocacy group, criticizes this trend.

NOS Stories surveyed around 125 schools, finding that three-quarters report issues such as vandalized posters and heated debates. Incidents include students wearing black instead of purple and burning rainbow flags.

Some students criticize the day as excessive, citing existing events like Coming Out Day and Pride Month. At Zaanlands Lyceum in Zaandam, changes were made after past incidents, like stink bombs and social media ridicule.

Teacher Bas Hageman states that despite opposition, the day emphasizes equality and will continue. An Education Ministry study from 2022 reveals that one in six students fear disclosing their sexuality.

A trans student, Tim*, reports bullying and reluctance to come out at school. COC Netherlands urges schools to continue supporting LGBTQ+ students, emphasizing safety and equality.
