Two months after the flood disaster in Valencia, at least 80,000 people took to the streets on Sunday evening to demand the resignation of regional President Carlos Mazón. The disaster resulted in at least 230 fatalities.
Protesters argue that Mazón did insufficient to prevent the tragedy and that warnings were issued too late. Criticism of the authorities’ response arose shortly after the disaster, with Mazón being blamed for the slow relief efforts.
Initially, some residents relied on themselves and volunteers for help. Debris clearance also took time, leaving streets cluttered with wrecked cars for weeks.
Tractors joined the protest as a tribute to those who aided in clearing debris post-disaster. Mazón has stated he will not resign but admitted to making mistakes and apologized to those who felt help was delayed or inadequate.
Two weeks ago, Spain’s King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and their daughters made a surprise visit to the area. During an earlier visit, the king was jeered and pelted with mud, prompting a security guard to shield him with an umbrella.
