Protests against the construction of a Chinese dam on a sacred site in Tibet were forcefully suppressed earlier this year, according to a BBC investigation. Hundreds of Tibetans were detained, and reports indicate severe violence was used against them.
Protests are rare in the tightly controlled Chinese region of Tibet. Despite fears of the Chinese regime, villagers and monks took to the streets in February 2023.
Authorities swiftly intervened, arresting hundreds and raiding homes in the valley.
