Protests in Italy Lead to Clashes Over Teen’s Death

Several protests in Italy have resulted in clashes between demonstrators and police. People took to the streets last night in various cities due to the death of an Egyptian-Italian teenager in November in Milan.

The 19-year-old, Ramy Elgaml, died following a police chase. Elgaml was a passenger on a scooter driven by a 22-year-old man and was pursued by police.

After 8 kilometers, Elgaml fell from the scooter. Authorities are investigating whether the officer driving the police vehicle intentionally collided with the scooter and whether police officers lied about the incident or tampered with evidence.

The protests last night were organized by anti-racism groups and took place in cities including Rome, Milan, Bologna, and Brescia. In Rome, protesters threw heavy fireworks and tear gas at police, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

Police used batons against the demonstrators, resulting in eight officers being injured. In Bologna, objects were thrown at officers, windows were smashed, and vandalism occurred at a synagogue.

Two individuals were arrested. Prime Minister Meloni condemned the disturbances, asserting that the death of Elgaml should not be used to justify violence and expressed her support for the police.
