In Belgrade, Serbia, thousands of people blocked a major intersection for an hour as part of a protest against the government. The intersection connects key roads, and the blockade halted a significant portion of traffic.
The protest was led by students demanding justice for those who attacked demonstrators during a previous protest. They accused these attackers of being “pro-government criminals.” Protests have been ongoing in Serbia for months following the collapse of a train station roof in Novi Sad last November, which resulted in fifteen fatalities and three severe injuries.
Many Serbians attribute the incident to poor construction due to government corruption and negligence. The roof had been recently renovated by Chinese companies frequently contracted by the Serbian government.
The railway company stated the renovation work did not involve the collapsed roof. Serbian media reported rust as a possible cause of the collapse.
Following the incident, the Minister of Infrastructure resigned, and the Serbian Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation, arresting thirteen individuals. However, the investigation’s independence is under scrutiny.
