Protests Erupt Over CDU and AfD Collaboration in Germany

The collaboration between CDU/CSU and Alternative for Germany (AfD) has sparked significant debate in Germany. Thousands took to the streets in various cities last night to protest this alliance.

The unrest began on Wednesday when, with AfD’s support, the German parliament passed a CDU motion to tighten migration policy. Until then, CDU/CSU, like other parties in the Bundestag, had avoided working with the far-right AfD, maintaining a ‘firewall’ that prevented motions from relying on AfD support for a majority.

This ‘firewall’ was effectively dismantled by the Christian Democrats on Wednesday. Demonstrators expressed their discontent in cities such as Leipzig, Berlin, Munich, Düsseldorf, Kiel, Freiburg, and Hanover.

In Leipzig, participants built a symbolic wall with boxes. In Berlin, around 6,000 people protested at the CDU headquarters, with vandalism reported at a smaller office in Charlottenburg.

Protests also occurred at a CDU campaign event. In Munich, approximately 7,000 people gathered at the CSU office, calling for resistance against cooperation with what they referred to as ‘fascists’.

Further demonstrations are expected in the coming days.
