Protests Erupt in Belgrade Against President Vucic

In Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, thousands of people took to the streets again to protest against the government led by President Vucic. The protests were initiated by students, and many schools, theaters, cafés, and other businesses closed their doors to allow people to join.

The demonstrators demand that the president take responsibility for the roof collapse at a train station in the northern city of Novi Sad, which resulted in fifteen deaths in early November. The protests, which have been ongoing for months, allege that government corruption contributed to the collapse, particularly in public project procurement and oversight.

A car incident occurred during the protests today in Belgrade, injuring one person, following a similar incident last week. A counter-demonstration by Vucic supporters took place in Jagodina, 135 kilometers south of Belgrade.

The protests are the largest since Vucic assumed power in 2017, with accusations of curbing democratic freedoms despite Serbia’s EU candidacy. Vucic also plans to establish a national political movement modeled after United Russia, aiming to bolster his Serbian Progressive Party.
