Protesters storm court in Seoul over Yoon’s detention

In Seoul, South Korea, supporters of the suspended President Yoon Suk-yeol stormed a courthouse, causing damage both inside and outside the building. This action was triggered by a court decision to extend Yoon’s detention.

Hundreds of protesters gathered, and despite efforts, the police could not contain the angry crowd. Rioters broke windows and entered the premises.

Photos and videos show destroyed furniture and computers. Fire extinguishers were used against officers, who were also pelted.

According to Reuters, citing local media, 46 people were arrested. After several hours, the police regained control.

It remains unclear if the rioters reached the courtroom where Yoon was present. He was transported to a detention center after the five-hour hearing.

Yoon faces prosecution for declaring martial law, an act he denies orchestrating as a rebellion. He risks life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

Although parliament voted to remove Yoon, the Constitutional Court must confirm this decision. Prosecutors requested the court to keep Yoon in custody, fearing he might destroy evidence, which the court approved, extending his detention by another twenty days.

Following protocol, Yoon now must wear prison clothing, making him the first South Korean president in such a situation. Yoon apologized for declaring a state of emergency but later claimed he acted to “protect democracy,” accusing the opposition of rendering the country ungovernable and collaborating with North Korea.

The opposition refutes these claims, asserting Yoon attempted a coup. The martial law was overturned within a few hours, causing significant chaos in the capital.
