Prosecution seeks community service for fatal boat crash

The Public Prosecution Service has demanded 180 hours of community service for two men, aged 65 and 59, involved in a fatal speedboat accident on the Maas River in 2021. A third individual, aged 55, was found guilty without a penalty being sought.

The incident occurred on September 5 near Roermond when two speedboats collided at high speed, injuring all five occupants. A 20-year-old man died from his injuries, and his then-18-year-old girlfriend was left permanently paralyzed.

The 65-year-old suspect was alone in his boat, while the 55-year-old was accompanied by the third suspect and the two victims in the other vessel. The prosecution holds all three men accountable, citing reckless and fast driving.

The 55-year-old lacked a boating license, and the 59-year-old, who had one, failed to intervene as the captain. The 55-year-old, who lost his 20-year-old son in the accident, faces a guilty verdict without a penalty.

The prosecution also seeks a one-year boating license suspension and compensation for the severely injured victim from the other two suspects. Both drivers claimed innocence in court, stating the collision was unavoidable.

A verdict is expected in four weeks.
