Privacy authority warns against using Chinese AI app DeepSeek

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) advises caution when using the new Chinese AI app, DeepSeek. The AP urges individuals to consider whether they should input personal and sensitive data into the app.

The Chinese company’s chatbot has recently stirred up the AI community, claiming performance comparable to Western rivals at a lower cost. AP chairman Aleid Wolfsen expressed “serious concerns” over DeepSeek’s privacy policies and data handling.

The AP plans to investigate data transfers to China, emphasizing that data from EU citizens can only be shared under strict privacy conditions. Users should be aware of the implications of uploading others’ data, as this may lead to unauthorized transfers.

The AP is coordinating with other European regulators, and Italy announced intentions to block DeepSeek due to privacy issues.
