Prince Harry has settled the significant lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch’s newspaper group. The settlement required an admission of guilt, an apology, and a substantial financial settlement.
News Group Newspapers (NGN) admitted to illegal practices by tabloids like The Sun and News of the World, including hacking phones and invading Harry’s privacy. Previously, NGN had denied these allegations.
Harry’s lawyer, David Sherborne, read a statement outside the court, calling it a “hugely significant victory.” Although NGN is held accountable, Harry claims those responsible remain in senior positions. He urged police and parliament to investigate Murdoch’s newspaper group’s illegal activities.
NGN also apologized for breaching the privacy of his mother, Princess Diana, whom Harry believes tabloids contributed to her death. Talks about a settlement gained traction last night, avoiding the need for the planned eight to ten weeks of trial.
Reuters reported the compensation is at least ten million pounds. Harry, alongside former Labour deputy chairman Tom Watson, was one of the last participants in this major lawsuit, with Watson also receiving an apology and substantial damages.
Many of the over 1,300 similar cases were settled, including one involving Harry’s brother, Prince William.
