Pete Hegseth confirmed as US Secretary of Defense

The U.S. Senate has confirmed former military officer and television host Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. Vice President J.D. Vance was required to cast the tie-breaking vote after the Senate split evenly, with fifty votes in favor and fifty against.

The Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, while the Democrats have 47. However, Republicans Susan Collins, Mitch McConnell, and Lisa Murkowski joined all Democrats in voting against the appointment.

In such cases, the Senate President, Vice President Vance, casts the deciding vote.
