Parents of children involved in the Barendrecht sexual abuse case face the dilemma of whether to inform their children about the abuse. Some young victims may be unaware they were involved in a crime, as noted by the judge during the initial hearing against suspect Mels van B. The Sexual Abuse Center (CSG) at the Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam assists parents in handling this situation.
Annually, about 200 children from the Rotterdam region receive support at the center, including many from Barendrecht. Parents arrive with a range of emotions, such as anger and helplessness.
Psychotherapist Joyce ten Doeschate-de Gruijl emphasizes the importance of parental guidance, as their reactions affect the child’s understanding of the abuse. The center advises parents to maintain composure and supports them in explaining the situation to their children.
Both Ten Doeschate-de Gruijl and pediatrician Patrycja Puiman advise parents to consider the impact of keeping such a secret from their children, as they may later learn about the abuse through media or social interactions. Keeping a journal of decisions regarding disclosure is recommended for future reference.
