This morning, police apprehended over one hundred drivers on the A15 near Ridderkerk for ignoring a red cross sign above the road. All these drivers will soon receive fines of at least 280 euros.
A red cross was used to close the left lane to provide safe assistance to a motorist with a breakdown, according to Rijnmond. However, police reported that the warning was ignored by 110 vehicles, creating a dangerous situation.
“The breakdown victim was very scared and did not dare to get out. We approached the victim at risk to our own safety,” the police stated on social media.
The police and Rijkswaterstaat have been highlighting the dangers of disregarding a red cross for some time. “A red cross is never displayed without reason.
Ignoring it poses immediate danger to both emergency responders and road users,” the police emphasized. The fine for ignoring a red cross increased from a minimum of 250 euros to at least 280 euros on February 1.
