Over 1 million displaced in Haiti due to violence

In Haiti, over one million people have been displaced within the country, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) of the United Nations. This marks the highest number of internally displaced people ever recorded in the nation, with more than half being children.

Haiti has been plagued by gang violence, absent governance, and failing public services and healthcare. Since the assassination of President Moïse in 2021, the country has experienced administrative chaos with no elections held.

Armed gangs have nearly full control over the capital, Port-au-Prince, and significant influence elsewhere. IOM Director Amy Pope stated, “Haiti needs ongoing humanitarian assistance to save and protect lives.

We must work together to address the root causes of the violence and instability leading to so much death and destruction.” The IOM reports that the number of displaced individuals has more than tripled in a year, with 315,000 fleeing by December 2023. Most displaced persons originate from the Port-au-Prince area and seek refuge in other provinces, where communities are overwhelmed, and already limited resources are strained.
