Organizations Urge Dutch Government for Clear Climate Policy

A coalition of organizations, including business groups, environmental movements, and farmers, has urged the Dutch government to expedite clear climate and energy policies. In a letter to Prime Minister Schoof, they warn that inconsistent policies risk bankruptcies and could leave the Netherlands falling behind.

The diverse group, part of the Social Alliance, includes VNO-NCW, trade unions, Greenpeace, Netbeheer Nederland, and LTO. Although often divided, they unanimously call for stable climate and energy policies.

National Climate Platform Chairman Kees Vendrik, also a signatory, emphasizes the economic cost of inaction. The letter stresses the need for stable policies for sectors ranging from industry to small businesses and energy communities.

The Cabinet’s current approach, including the abandonment of mandatory heat pump installations by 2026, has stalled progress, leading to company failures. The organizations argue that sustainability is wrongly seen as a barrier to prosperity and urge the government to invest in sustainable technologies, positioning the Netherlands as a leader.

They warn of international competition preparing for a sustainable future while Dutch entrepreneurs face high energy costs and network congestion. The coalition demands investments in sustainable practices and infrastructure connectivity.

They also advocate for fair opportunities for farmers and low-income households. Vendrik summarizes the collective message, urging the Cabinet to maintain the climate and energy transition for the benefit of citizens and businesses.
