Ongoing DDOS attacks disrupt Dutch education and healthcare

For the third consecutive day, educational and healthcare institutions in the country are experiencing internet disruptions due to a significant DDOS attack, according to SURF, the targeted network provider. SURF manages internet traffic for institutions such as Dutch educational facilities.

Higher education and academic hospitals appear to be particularly affected. A DDOS attack is a cyberattack that floods a computer or network with excessive traffic to disrupt its operations.

Yesterday, several educational and research institutions faced internet outages or slow connections due to an attack on SURF’s ICT network, which was reportedly halted by the afternoon. On Wednesday, Fontys University’s computer network was unreachable for hours because of a DDOS attack on SURF’s network, impacting 43,000 students and staff.
