One dead in Valthermond house fire; suspect arrested

In a house fire in the village of Valthermond in Drenthe last night, one person died, and another individual, who sustained minor injuries, has been arrested. The fire started early in the evening, and firefighters managed to prevent it from spreading to adjacent homes.

Initially, it was reported that the victim had been taken to the hospital with severe injuries, but today the police confirmed the person was found deceased. The police are investigating the identity of the victim.

A 35-year-old man from Emmen with burn injuries was later found nearby and taken into custody before being hospitalized. His involvement in the fire is still under investigation.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. According to the police, the fire might have been caused by a preceding explosion, and several blasts were reported during the fire.

There were suspicions of fireworks in the house, which is still under investigation. The investigation into the fire and explosions continues today, with the Defense Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service involved, according to RTV Drenthe.
