Nord Stream sabotage released massive methane emissions

Following the explosions of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, between 446,000 and 485,000 tons of methane gas were released into the atmosphere, according to a new publication by dozens of scientists. This amount is slightly less than the annual emissions from the entire Dutch agricultural sector.

On September 26, 2022, the pipelines meant to supply Russian gas to Western Europe were sabotaged, resulting in the largest recorded gas leak in history. Researchers had previously made various estimates of the leak size in late 2022.

The gas contributes to global warming by trapping heat, with methane being a significant contributor to climate change.
