The NOC*NSF will discontinue its elite sports and training program for gymnasts at the Maaspoort in Den Bosch next year. Gymnasts, including young talents, must relocate to other potential locations such as Rotterdam, Hoofddorp, or Heerenveen.
Olympic gymnast Jermain Grünberg expressed frustration, stating they were presented with many problems but few solutions. Grünberg, who has trained at the Maaspoort since a young age, considers it a second home and is concerned about the impending changes.
NOC*NSF cited insufficient performance results and existing financial commitments at other locations as reasons for the move. Remco Boer, director of the gymnastics federation KNGU, criticized the late notice and geographical logic of the decision.
Parents of young talents like Stijn van Gaalen and Hylke de Rouw voiced concerns about the new travel distances impacting training and school. The municipality of Den Bosch was surprised by the decision, as earlier indications were that the program would remain and expand there.
The KNGU intends to maintain talent development in the region despite reduced support from NOC*NSF, and NOC*NSF will provide transitional arrangements for affected athletes.
