No Prosecution in Montferland Firework Incident

The police and the Public Prosecution Service have been unable to determine who was responsible for the fireworks incident involving two Montferland council members in early December. The investigation is now closed with no criminal charges, according to the municipality.

On December 2, a meeting was held in ‘s-Heerenberg to discuss the establishment of an asylum seekers center, which was met with a protest. Before the council meeting, two council members were targeted with fireworks, resulting in temporary hearing damage.

A police car was also damaged by the fireworks. The municipality stated that the investigation could not definitively establish who set off the fireworks or whether they were intentionally directed at the council members.

Consequently, no one will face prosecution, as confirmed by the Public Prosecution Service. Mayor Harry de Vries of Montferland expressed in a statement that he considers the incident unacceptable, as reported by Omroep Gelderland.

“Even though the investigation has no criminal consequences, it remains unacceptable that our council members felt unsafe during their work,” read a statement on the municipality’s website. “We advocate for respectful interactions, especially in political debates.”
