The parents of nine-year-old André, who was killed in the attack at the Christmas market in Magdeburg, have touched many with their tribute on Facebook. His mother, Désirée Gleissner, expressed her grief, asking, “Why?
André did nothing to anyone.” Both she and his father, Marco Gleissner, shared messages of farewell to their son. The post received widespread attention, being shared over 180,000 times in just one day.
André and four adults were killed when a 50-year-old man drove into the crowded market, injuring 200 people, 40 critically. André lived in the village of Warle, an hour from Magdeburg, and was a member of the local youth fire brigade.
The Lower Saxony Youth Fire Brigade expressed condolences and created a donation page to support the family. Police are investigating the attack, with the suspect in custody facing charges of multiple murders and attempted murders.
Security measures at Christmas markets are being reviewed following the incident.
