The Nigerian Air Force conducted an airstrike in Zamfara State, resulting in civilian casualties, as reported by local authorities and residents. Sources indicate that 16 people died in the incident.
The governor’s spokesperson expressed regret, stating that members of a civilian vigilante group were also affected, having been mistaken for fleeing criminals. The air force acknowledged carrying out the strike, aiming at armed gangs, and described the operation as successful, claiming they had dealt a significant blow to criminals and rescued hostages.
However, they are concerned about reports of civilian casualties. Local media reported that civilians were wrongly identified as gang members, while they were actually defending themselves.
An eyewitness informed AFP that residents were returning home when attacked. Amnesty International suggests the death toll might be higher, estimating around twenty deaths and numerous injuries.
The human rights organization calls for an independent investigation by the government. The air force has announced the initiation of an investigation.
Kidnappings for ransom by armed gangs are increasing in Nigeria. This incident is not the first of its kind; in December, a similar airstrike in Sokoto State led to ten civilian deaths.
Amnesty International criticizes such airstrikes as illegal and reckless.
