New Year’s dives canceled due to weather concerns

The New Year’s dive in Scheveningen has been canceled. Organizations in Egmond aan Zee, Castricum, and Noordwijk had previously announced that the traditional dive on January 1 will not take place.

The weather forecast predicts strong winds with gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour, which could lead to high water levels. Ernst Brokmeier from the Reddingsbrigade Nederland stated that while organizers are currently assessing safety risks, he expects more cancellations to be announced tomorrow.

The strong wind poses a risk for entering the water, as high waves and strong currents can be dangerous even for those standing knee-deep. Additionally, tents and stalls used during the event are not safe in such windy conditions.

Brokmeier also warns about the dangers of diving in lakes and rivers where waves can occur, although it may be less risky inland due to lower wind speeds. The decision to cancel is difficult for organizers as the event is considered a highlight of the new year.
