In Georgia, the new president Mikheil Kavelashvili has been inaugurated. His predecessor, Salome Zourabichvili, still considers herself the legitimate president, claiming Kavelashvili’s election resulted from fraud during the parliamentary elections at the end of October.
The pro-Russian ruling party, Georgian Dream, unexpectedly emerged victorious, leading to intense protests. A catalyst for the unrest was Georgian Dream’s announcement to suspend European Union accession talks until 2028.
The opposition demanded new parliamentary elections under international supervision to prevent further fraud. Independent observers also suspected fraud, prompting the European Parliament to request fresh elections within a year for the EU candidate member.
