New Georgian Election Date Must Be Set Within a Week

A new date for parliamentary elections in Georgia must be announced within a week, according to President Zurabishvili in her speech to parliament in Tbilisi, attended by tens of thousands of Georgians. Her term ends this month, but she insists on staying until new elections are declared.

Last week, former footballer Kavelashvili was chosen as Zurabishvili’s successor by an electoral college, following a constitutional change that removed direct public voting for the presidency. Zurabishvili stated a new election date must be set by December 29, coinciding with the inauguration of the new president.

She invited Ivanishvili, former prime minister and founder of the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party, to discuss the new election date at the presidential palace, along with Prime Minister Kobakhidze and the Georgian parliament’s chairperson.
