Netherlands supports removing border checks for Bulgaria, Romania

The Netherlands remains in favor of fully removing border controls with Bulgaria and Romania. Asylum Minister Faber disregards an attempt by her own party, the PVV, to obstruct this, and she is supported by the majority of the House of Representatives.

Previously, the Netherlands opposed the two countries joining the Schengen Area, citing ineffective border controls, particularly in Bulgaria. However, the previous Rutte IV Cabinet eventually agreed last year.

Since March, there have been no controls at airports and seaports in Romania and Bulgaria, and soon the land borders will also open. PVV Parliament Member Vondeling called the Schengen expansion irresponsible, arguing that it will lead to increased asylum, migration, and corruption.

Faber emphasized that the previous Cabinet approved the accession and that neighboring countries Austria and Hungary have made additional agreements, allowing an agreement to be reached. The minister acknowledged numerous risks and shared PVV’s concerns but is not planning to use her veto.

She told NOS that while she is not comfortable with further opening, it is the Cabinet’s decision, and she must uphold it.
