Netflix fined €4.75 million for privacy violations by EU watchdog

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined streaming service Netflix €4.75 million for failing to clearly communicate to customers how their personal data was being used. The authority stated that Netflix violated the European privacy law (GDPR) by providing unclear information to those who inquired.

This issue affects Netflix customers across all EU countries, as the company’s headquarters is located in Amsterdam. The fine amount reflects the severity of the violation, the number of potential victims, and Netflix’s revenue.

Although more severe cases have occurred this year, such as fines against Uber and Clearview, according to the authority’s spokesperson, Netflix has filed an objection against the fine. The company has updated its privacy statement and improved customer information, but was unavailable for further comment according to NOS.
