NATO chief warns of unpreparedness for potential conflict

This afternoon, NATO chief Mark Rutte expressed concerns about the current security situation, stating that preparations for potential conflict are insufficient. Recently, Defense Minister Brekelmans emphasized the need for citizens to prepare for crises like floods, pandemics, or prolonged disruption of essential services.

This need for increased resilience is part of the Dutch government’s program. Incidents in North Limburg and Woerden highlighted the urgency for preparedness when essential resources were temporarily unavailable.

Demand for emergency supplies has surged, with businesses like Luuk van de Ruit’s prep shop experiencing high order volumes. The Red Cross also reports increased inquiries following local incidents.

The Dutch Banking Association recently advised citizens to keep cash at home for emergencies, leading to a rise in small cash withdrawals. Despite this, Dutch citizens generally score low in crisis preparedness, a trend the government aims to change with a national campaign set for 2025, encouraging citizens to maintain emergency kits including water, food, and essential items as advised by the Red Cross.
