Mosaqua swimming pool in Gulpen set to close permanently

The Mosaqua subtropical swimming pool in Gulpen is set to close permanently at the end of the Christmas holidays. Despite attracting over 200,000 visitors annually and being the largest pool in South Limburg, the local government has decided to withdraw financial support.

According to director Bertil Kaanen, a business plan and potential investor were presented, but the municipality refused further involvement. Opened in 1992, Mosaqua initially drew around 250,000 visitors annually, including many for swimming certifications.

Even during the pandemic, it remained popular. This year, Kaanen realized the pool was in jeopardy when the municipality cited high operational costs and significant future maintenance as reasons for ceasing subsidies.

On November 4, the Gulpen-Wittem council voted narrowly, 8 to 7, to stop funding. Kaanen and his team questioned the decision, arguing that feasibility studies were predetermined.

Union FNV also protested, highlighting the impact on the community and job losses. Trustee Marijke Schmitz has filed for bankruptcy, with closure expected after January 5.

Schmitz sees no chance for a restart as the municipality plans to demolish the pool this summer.
