Mosaqua in Gulpen closes after 32 years

The subtropical swimming paradise Mosaqua in Gulpen is closing after 32 years. Many regular visitors are returning this weekend for a final, often emotional, swim.

Piet Smeijsters, a patron for over 20 years, expressed sadness over the loss of a cherished tradition. Mosaqua, the largest pool in South Limburg, attracts 200,000 visitors annually.

However, the local government will no longer provide financial support due to high operational costs and necessary maintenance. The municipality has reportedly subsidized approximately half the cost of each ticket.

According to broadcaster L1, visitors describe the closure as regrettable or even outrageous. Many locals have fond memories of the pool.

Riccardo Piek, who has worked there for six years, recalls learning to swim and experiencing his first kiss at the pool. There is still hope, as investors are interested in taking over the pool.

An emergency meeting with the local council is scheduled for January 16 to discuss this possibility.
