At least 54 people were killed in a mortar attack on an open-air market in the Sudanese city of Omdurman, according to local health authorities. Many victims were women and children visiting the Sabrein market near the capital, Khartoum.
The attack injured at least 158 people. The paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been engaged in a civil war with the government army for nearly two years, carried out the attack but has not commented on it.
A local Doctors Without Borders worker at Al-Naw hospital described the scene as “an absolute bloodbath.” A government spokesperson condemned the attack as a “blatant violation of international human rights.” Since April 2023, the civil war has claimed at least 28,000 lives. Both sides have been accused of human rights violations, with the RSF recently accused of genocide by the US.
Attacks like this occur weekly, with a recent attack on the last functioning hospital in Al-Fashir killing 70 people.
