Monument unveiled for vulnerable people in Utrecht

A new monument has been erected near the entrance of the ‘junk tunnel’ beneath the Hoog Catharijne shopping center in Utrecht to raise awareness for vulnerable people marginalized by society. During the 1980s and 1990s, hundreds of drug addicts and homeless people lived in the tunnel under dire conditions.

Jan van Ooik, a former resident, recalls the harsh reality of that time and appreciates the monument, called “The Forgotten Existence,” by artist Lucas Mergler, which depicts a person trying to shield themselves from the cold.
