Thousands of Montenegrins gathered today to honor the victims of the mass shooting that occurred on New Year’s Day. On Wednesday, a man opened fire at multiple locations in the town of Cetinje, located in the western part of the country.
Twelve people, including two children, were killed. At the site where the shooting began, candles were lit, and flowers were left.
Attendees observed a minute of silence for each victim. Many Montenegrins accuse the police of not doing enough to stop the shooter.
“We are here to get answers about why there was no timely response and who should be held accountable,” a woman at the memorial told Reuters. According to the police, the shooter was a 45-year-old man from Cetinje who was heavily intoxicated during the attack.
When the police surrounded him at his home, he took his own life. Local police stated that the perpetrator possessed illegal weapons.
Following the shooting, President Milatovic declared three days of national mourning. Gun ownership is widespread in Montenegro, and there are many illegal firearms in circulation.
In 2022, Cetinje also experienced a deadly shooting that left eleven people dead.
