Mix-up of letters at Vught prison leads to data breach

The PI Vught prison mistakenly swapped and sent two inmate letters to the wrong recipients due to an “administrative error in the prison’s mail handling,” according to the Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI). The letters, containing visitor information, ended up in the wrong envelopes, leading to the wrongful disclosure of two prisoners’ and two visitors’ details.

The data breach was reported to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, as confirmed by the DJI to Omroep Brabant. This incident is reportedly the first of its kind.

Apologies have been issued to those affected. The DJI assured that the mistake does not impact security at PI Vught, which houses high-profile criminals and suspects in its Extra Security Institution and includes highly guarded departments like the Terrorist Wing and the Management of Problematic Detainees.
