Four minors were detained last week for their involvement in a ‘choking challenge,’ according to the police. This dangerous trend, popular on TikTok, involves self-induced or assisted choking until near unconsciousness.
The incident involving the minors occurred in mid-January at a school in Rotterdam. The boy who was choked briefly lost consciousness but recovered without needing hospital care.
The four suspects have been released pending further proceedings. The police stated that all those involved were shocked by the event and unaware of the risks.
In Nieuwegein, a 16-year-old boy died as a result of the choking challenge. He attended Anna van Rijn College in Nieuwegein and was in the third year of pre-university education.
The police reported no other parties were involved in his death, leading to no further investigation. The boy’s parents requested the school disclose the cause of death to warn other parents.
