Minister opposes Schiphol noise reduction motion

Minister Madlener of Infrastructure and Water Management (PVV) has criticized a motion aimed at reducing noise pollution at Schiphol Airport as “very unwise.” The motion, supported by a majority in the House of Representatives, was initiated by coalition party NSC. Earlier this month, Madlener had announced a plan to reduce noise pollution by 15%, contrary to the coalition agreement, which aimed for a 17% reduction by 2025 and eventually 20%.

The motion urges adherence to at least a 17% reduction. Madlener argues that such a reduction is too rapid for the aviation industry, warning of a year’s delay and continued noise for residents.

He has not yet decided whether to implement the motion, pending cabinet discussions. In March, a court ruled that the state failed to adequately protect residents from noise pollution, deeming its actions unlawful.
