Methanol Poisoning in Istanbul Claims 30 Lives

In Istanbul, since Monday, at least thirty people have died from consuming poisoned alcohol, according to Turkish authorities who cite a “significant increase” in cases of methanol poisoning. Turkish media report that at least 65 individuals have been hospitalized, including dozens of foreigners.

Police have arrested six suspects for selling the contaminated alcohol, and authorities have revoked multiple alcohol sales licenses. Over 29 tons of alcohol were seized in the first half of January.

Methanol poisonings from illegally produced alcohol are not uncommon in Turkey. In December, dozens in Istanbul also died from tainted alcohol.

The price of alcoholic beverages in Turkey has surged due to a tax increase, with a liter of the national drink raki costing approximately 35 euros. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning to travelers, advising them to purchase alcoholic drinks only from official stores and to monitor their food and beverages.

The travel advisory for Turkey remains unchanged.
