Tech giant Meta has immediately halted its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) program. In a memo to global employees, the company cited changes in the legal and policy landscape concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion in the United States.
The memo noted that recent decisions by the US Supreme Court signal a shift in how courts will approach DEI. The term “DEI” has become contentious, perceived by some as prioritizing certain groups over others.
Consequently, Meta will no longer actively seek suppliers with diverse backgrounds or ensure diverse candidates for every vacancy. Instead, the company will focus on programs that reduce biases for all individuals, regardless of background.
Other major US companies, such as Walmart and McDonald’s, have also revised their diversity and equality programs recently. According to the American news site Axios, Meta’s move signals to employees that the company’s push for progress under Donald Trump’s new administration is not merely superficial but reflects a shift in corporate ethics impacting their operations.
Earlier this week, Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg announced additional changes, including ending partnerships with fact-checkers, citing political bias. He also aims to alter moderation policies, reducing restrictions on topics like immigration and gender.
