Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel received the Golden Medal in Amsterdam from Mayor Femke Halsema. The award, the city’s highest municipal honor, was given for Merkel’s “services as chancellor and her significant impact on Europe.” Previous recipients include Nelson Mandela and Winston Churchill.
Halsema praised Merkel as a leader embodying the spirit of freedom and for her steadfast commitment to the rule of law. Earlier, Merkel signed copies of her new book “Freedom” and delivered a lecture in the city.
The ceremony was held privately at the mayor’s residence.
